Communication, Community, and How to Shine: Takeaways from the “Community” Conference

On Jul 2, 2024 members of our Buzz Team had the pleasure of attending the “Community – Welcome To The Neighborhood Of Effective Communication” conference, hosted by PRos & COMMS Ltd. Their motto, “communication is central to the foundation of building anything you can dream of,” perfectly captured the essence of the event.

The conference aimed to bring together communication professionals and enthusiasts in Trinidad and Tobago to form a powerful network. It offered a lineup of engaging speakers and topics, focusing on communication, community building, and personal branding.

Utilizing Apt & Effective Language:

L. Anthony Watkins’ presentation on the “Psychology Of Communication” emphasized the power of language and the need to consider the historical and emotional weight behind words. He emphasized understanding the root of words and using them thoughtfully, highlighting the power of language to impact others and that as communicators we have to be aware of what concerns others.

The session “Protocol Under Fire” by Sheyna Weston and Keisha Rockford-Herbert highlighted the role of respect and the importance of knowing and following established guidelines in professional settings. All communication professionals should be familiar with protocol as it establishes order in chaotic situations.

Crafting Your Communication Style:

Tisha C Jack and Leisel Douglas’ fireside chat “Events As A Strategy?” discussed the use of events as communication tools. Events are about creating touchpoints to create connections. They advised considering the five senses to create a memorable experience and aligning the event format with the intended messaging.

Wendell Constantine, a broadcast media and communications strategist, shared valuable insights during his “Hosting” fireside chat. He emphasized professionalism, preparation, and adapting to the specific event’s tone and audience. Learning to read the room is an invaluable skill and being able to change course thanks to advanced preparations can ensure that the free flow of communication is never stagnated. 

Sadé Powell’s presentation on personal branding “Style Staples With Sadé” stressed and showcased the power of style in communicating your unique essence. The importance of communicating through fashion was linked style to self-perception, branding, and confidence. Powell truly had us questioning ourselves. Why take the mediocre route when you can be exceptional?

Content Creation for Success:

Kyle Hernandez, a content creator, encouraged participants to embrace finding their voice and sharing their stories through content creation. He highlighted the power of video content and storytelling in building trust and brand loyalty.
